Barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) - the barracuda is a common species found along both the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts. A long silver, torpedo shaped fish, the barracuda has a formidable set of teeth that it uses to lacerate its prey before consuming it. In Cuba, most adult barracuda weigh between eight and twelve pounds but individuals reaching over thirty pounds are regularly caught.

The barracuda is a beautiful fish and highly underrated, probably because it is so common in Cuba that it can be a nuisance, especially when trolling.

Silver, with a blue-green sheen and dark stripes, the fish has a pointed snout, huge canine-like teeth and a mean eye. A superb fighter, the barracuda is a great adversary on light spinning or fly tackle and its grey-hounding jumps are sometimes interspersed with javelin-like leaps that make catching the fish on the right gear a memorable experience.

The flats at La Salinas act as a nursery for barracuda and juveniles can be great sport on light tackle but adult fish are also found, a wire leader is a must and don't forget your forceps!
