Crevalle Jack (caranx hippos) - the jacks are a family of fish that include the crevalles, the trevallies and the infamous permit. Jack Crevalle are common throughout Cuba, growing to sizes in excess of thirty pounds and living in schools or small groups. Jacks are renown for their aggressive, skittish behaviour and they are much-loved for their superb fighting abilities and willingness to take all manner of jigs, flies, plugs baits and spoons.

They can be caught on the saltwater flats, at the lower end of the tidal rivers and in the open ocean. Poppers are a great way to catch jacks, with the surface takes being explosive. Grey-blue in colour with pale flanks and a dash of yellow along the lateral line, the fish can be distinguished by its huge, extended pectorals which have a black spot underneath them. The Crevalle is a ferocious opponent with incredible tenacity.

A 'Mike Tyson' of the fish world, jack Crevalles are arguably the hardest fighting fish on the planet on a pound-for-pound basis.
